new-headshot-cropped-09-2015Dr. Patrick M. Boyle, who has held research appointments in the Institute for Computational Medicine since 2011, has been promoted to the rank of Assistant Research Professor of Biomedical Engineering and has accepted our invitation to join the ICM core faculty. Patrick is a fervent supporter of ICM, proposing and implementing welcome enhancements to institute events and activities, while he has championed the case for computational medicine in the greater community of biomedical scientists and clinicians.

Patrick’s research involves the development and application of computer models of the heart aimed at discovering new treatment schemes and better understand of the mechanisms of lethal arrhythmias. He is particularly interested in using simulations to explore potential clinical applications of cardiac optogenetics, an exciting new technology that uses gene therapy to enable stimulation of heart tissue with gentle beams of light.

Prior to joining Johns Hopkins University, initially as a postdoctoral fellow, Patrick earned a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and a BSc in Computer Engineering from the University of Calgary.
