Tilak Ratnanather Highlights Accessibility of Mathematics for People with Hearing Loss

11/17/2017

In an article published in the November 2017 issue of Notices of the American Mathematical Society, Tilak Ratnanather points out that because of its visual nature mathematics is an attractive discipline to people with hearing loss. It may seem surprising then, that very few people with hearing loss have achieved advanced degrees in Mathematics. In his article, “Accessible Mathematics for People with Hearing Loss at Colleges and Universities,” Ratnanather provides insight into the challenges that face people with hearing loss and ways to improve accessibility that may encourage people with hearing loss to pursue a PhD in mathematics.

Ratnanather is an ICM core faculty member and associate research professor in the department of biomedical engineering. He has recruited or mentored over 50 individuals with hearing loss in STEM fields. His full article can be found here.
