Wangui Mbuguiro and Cynthia Steinhardt, recipients of NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

Wangui Mbuguiro and Cynthia Steinhardt, PhD students in the Institute for Computational Medicine, are recipients of National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships. The highly competitive Graduate Research Fellowship Program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees. Mbuguiro and Steinhardt will receive a three-year annual stipend along with a cost of education allowance for tuition and fees and the freedom to conduct their own research.

Both Mbuguiro and Steinhardt are pursuing a PhD in biomedical engineering. Mbuguiro works in the ICM lab of Feilim Mac Gabhann, associate professor of biomedical engineering, where she is developing computational models of angiogenesis in endometriosis. Steinhardt conducts her research under the mentorship of Sridevi Sarma, associate professor of biomedical engineering and associate director of ICM. Steinhardt’s research focuses on mapping the response of the brain to electrical stimulation and using computational methods to predict the brain’s responses to future stimulation.

The fellowships which were awarded to Mbuguiro and Steinhardt in 2017 will support their research beginning in the fall of 2018.
