Scientists with disabilities who work in a field related to their disability offer unique viewpoints to academic research, thus enhancing research in their field. A recent article in the spring 2019 issue of Acoustics Today focuses on the contributions of deaf or hard-of-hearing scientists to the field of auditory research in their own words.

In the article, “Scientists with Hearing Loss Changing Perspectives in STEMM,” Tilak Ratnanather, associate research professor of biomedical engineering and ICM core faculty member, is one of four scientists who shares how his experience with hearing loss influenced his decision to pursue a career in auditory science research, and inspired him to become a role-model and mentor to students and peers with hearing loss to pursue careers in STEMM.
