Laurent Younes elected as 2023 SIAM Fellow

04/04/2023

Laurent Younes, a professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics and a core faculty member in both the Institute for Computational Medicine and the Center for Imaging Science, has been named a 2023 Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Laurent was recognized for fundamental contributions to the theory and computation of shape space in image analysis.

Laurent’s pioneering shape-analysis algorithms have enabled researchers and clinicians to better interpret medical-imaging data to advance the detection and treatment of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiac disease, mental illness, and more. As a member of JHU’s Center for Imaging Science, he leads research teams in studying the statistical properties of image analysis, deformation analysis, and shape recognition, and Markov Random Fields.

Laurent’s contributions to his field are significant, both in terms of advancing knowledge and their impact on society.
