  • Have you always wanted to work on a real-world problem in pharmaceutical R&D? Join us!!

    The Novartis Quantitative Science Academia-to-Industry Hackathon is an intense two-week program designed to provide graduate students and postdocs with training and hands-on experience working on real-world problems in pharmaceutical R&D. The program is targeted at graduate students and postdocs in the quantitative sciences (e.g. Bioinformatics, Engineering, Mathematics, Pharmacometrics, Physics, Statistics, Systems Pharmacology). The Hackathon consists of a three-day tutorial on fundamental training in Translational Quantitative Sciences including basic pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PKPD) and population PKPD using the open-source R-based nonlinear mixed effect modeling software nlmixr.

    Following the tutorial, students will work in project teams on real-world, open-ended problems in collaboration with Novartis scientists working across the R&D spectrum.

    The researchers will present their final results at the “Quantitative Sciences in Drug Development Conference” sponsored by Novartis, which will be held on the last day of the hackathon, Friday, August 24th 2018.

    What does the programme involve?

    The IMED Early Phase Drug Discovery Graduate Programme will give you broad experience of the drug discovery process by immersing you in real science, giving you responsibility on real projects from the outset and providing ongoing mentoring. The two year programme includes three individual, eight month placements, which you can choose from an extensive range of placements, allowing you to tailor your development to your particular passion – whether this is in chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology or another branch of science. And as well as building your scientific knowledge, we’ll help you to develop ‘soft’ skills to ease your transition into industry.

    Wherever you’re based, you’ll be working with colleagues who are true experts, as well as with academic institutions and like-minded scientific companies. You’ll discover how we’re pioneering more open innovation, and actively sharing knowledge and ideas to make the next scientific breakthrough.

    Some of our current intake have already presented at conferences or had their scientific research published; many will go on to secure prestigious PhDs. Others will take up challenging roles in science. But what will you achieve?

  • In this role, you have the opportunity to play an active role in the research team by contributing creative ideas, designing and developing data analytics solutions in healthcare, resulting in patents that protect potential future expansion of our healthcare business.

    You are responsible for

    • Designing novel algorithms for data mining, visual analytics in collaboration with hospitals
    • Leading Agile projects and a small team of Data Scientists
    • Developing the analytics prototypes hands-on and implementing analytics solutions with engineers
    • Evaluating and validating your data analytics solutions in the hospital settings
    • Documenting your innovation outcomes in a formal way such as patents, technical notes, as well as peer-reviewed publications
    • Collaborating with colleagues from other groups in Philips working in related fields and assisting your colleagues with your data analytics insights, both in China and abroad
