Sandya Subramanian wins Churchill Scholarship
Sandya Subramanian, a Biomedical Engineering and Applied Math and Statistics joint major, has won a scholarship from the Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States for graduate study at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Clinical Neurosciences. The Churchill Scholarship is awarded annually to 14 or more students who have demonstrated a capacity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the sciences, engineering or mathematics by completing original, creative work at an advanced level. “This is an amazing opportunity that so few people get,” said Sandya of the award.
The prestigious scholarship brings the Hopkins senior one step closer to her goal of becoming a computational neuroscience researcher. Working in the lab of Assistant Professor Sri Sarma of the Institute for Computational Medicine for the past three years, Sandya has developed a tool to assist doctors in pinpointing the portion of the brain where seizures originate in people with epilepsy. “There is no doubt in my mind that Sandya has a remarkable ability to be innovative and conduct original research that will have a high impact on the field of neuroscience, computational medicine, and patients suffering from epilepsy,” observed Sri.
